Mr. Carey regularly advises clients on tax matters and represents clients in tax disputes with the IRS, state tax agencies, and in U.S. Tax Court. He provides income tax planning and compliance advice to individuals, trusts, estates and business owners. He also works with business owners to develop business succession strategies as part of a comprehensive estate and wealth preservation plan.
Mr. Carey is a graduate of Northeastern University and Albany Law School. He is licensed to practice in Virginia, Georgia, Massachusetts, and New York, before the U.S. Tax Court and the U. S. District Courts for the Eastern and Western Districts of Virginia.
Mr. Carey previously practiced law with prominent law firms in New York and Atlanta where he worked on estate planning and estate administration, tax litigation matters, and represented taxpayers in tax disputes with the IRS.
Prior to this, he served as general counsel to private manufacturing companies and was a tax consultant at PricewaterhouseCoopers in Boston where he advised privately held businesses on a wide array of tax matters. Immediately following law school, Mr. Carey was a personal law clerk to Hon. Lawrence E. Kahn, U.S. District Judge for the Northern District of New York.
In addition to his professional practice, Mr. Carey teaches and lectures on accounting, tax, and estate planning. He served as an Adjunct Professor of Law at Albany Law School in Albany, NY (2002 – 2017) and at the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General’s Legal Center and School in Charlottesville, VA (2014 – 2017).
Mr. Carey is an Officer in the U.S. Army Reserve where he currently serves as a Rule of Law Team Chief for the 213th Legal operations Detachment. The Rule of Law Team provides guidance and legal counsel to commanders on the international legal framework for rule of law across the full spectrum of military operations – both along and beyond the conflict spectrum. The legal framework for rule of law operations includes United Nations Mandates, the Law of Armed Conflict, Treaty Law, Customary International Law, Occupation Law, and Human Rights Law.
